American-Made, Battle-Tested Rugged Military Electronics Solutions

In the early years, Mountain Secure Systems (MSS) supplied SEL-2-WORM Optical Storage Systems to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Optical Storage Systems for NASA. We also supplied ruggedized Magneto Optical Drives to the Navy, particularly the Aegis Destroyer and the P-3 Orion.

MSS provides sealed rugged hard drives for diverse applications, ranging from the Wedgetail aircraft and the P3 Orion, to the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) used on the Predator B UAV. With the low cost per GB of ruggedized rotating hard drives compared to the cost of solid state drives, MSS is adept at providing data storage systems to Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISAR) platforms. MSS has also ruggedized fragile hard drives that have performed flawlessly in the harshest environments, including sonar applications for the Blackhawk helicopters and F-16 radar systems.

Specific MSS case studies include:

  • Customized Solid State Data Recorder with secure erase capability and tool-less handles to meet MIL-STD-810F standards and performed qualification tests to the standards
  • Manufactured Customer designed Short Plug Assembly Datalogger
  • Customized data recorder and disks with conduction cooled 4-bay, high-speed data recorder and corresponding SATA solid state disks to Customer application, which extended operational temperature threshold
  • Upgraded Cascade Series SCSI sealed rugged hard drive and docking bay to a Cascade Series removable SATA sealed rugged hard drive and docking bay, which extended operational temperature threshold and improved vibration, shock, altitude and impedance matching for high-speed SATA data transfer. The project showcases Mountain Secure Systems' ability to deliver high-storage capabilities into extreme environment at a low cost per gigabyte.
  • MSS designed, developed and qualified a conduction cooled 2 slot 6U VME system. The unit houses two removable sealed 128GB SATA SSD units that mount via levered wedge locks. This allows for easy removability of just the storage modules without removing the entire 6U VME card.

Project: Sniper™ Advanced Targeting Pod (ATP)

Background Data
The combat-proven Sniper Pod is the U.S. Air Force's advanced targeting pod (ATP) of record. The Sniper ATP provides critical long-range, positive identification of targets and possesses a video down link (VDL) equipped with the widely used Rover ground receiver to relay high resolution streaming video to forward-deployed forces for NT-ISR and rapid target coordination. Its advanced target identification capabilities enhance the Warfighter's ability to detect and analyze ground targets while dramatically decreasing the risks posed by enemy air defenses.

Customer: Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control

Project: Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS)

Background Data
MEADS is a mobile Air and Missile Defense System that will incorporate the hit-to-kill PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) Missile in a system that includes 360-degree surveillance and fire control sensors, netted-distributed battle management/communication centers and high-firepower launchers. The system will combine superior battlefield protection with extensive flexibility, allowing it to protect maneuver forces and critical assets against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft. MEADS will replace Patriot systems in the United States and Germany and Nike Hercules systems in Italy.

Project: 737 AEW&C/Project Wedgetail

Background Data
The 737 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system encompasses both the Boeing 737-700 aircraft platform and a variety of aircraft control and advanced radar systems. Consisting of components created by Boeing and Northrop Grumman, the 737 AEW&C represents the standard for future airborne early warning systems.

Customer: Lockheed Martin Mission Systems & Sensors (MS2)

Project: P-3 Anti-Surface Warfare Improvement Program (P-3C AIP)

Background Data
As prime contractor to NAVAIRSYSCOM since 1994, Lockheed Martin is prime and systems integrator enhancing P-3C avionics, including non-acoustic sensors, communications, survivability and displays and controls. New workstations, SATCOM capabilities, and enhanced radar, optical and infrared (IR) sensors will significantly increase the aircraft's surveillance role. The technology used draws on the latest COTS and non-developmental items. To date, the company has delivered 60 AIP aircraft to the U.S. Navy. Additionally, a series of preplanned product improvements (P3I) to enhance system capabilities are underway.

Project: Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)

Background Data
Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) is a key element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) designed to defend U.S. troops, allied forces, population centers, and critical infrastructure. THAAD operates in a unique battle space intercepting both endo- and exo-atmospheric short-to-intermediate range ballistic missiles. This ground-based missile defense system is rapidly deployable with high mobility, providing proven capability to Combatant Commanders world-wide. THAAD is an interoperable system with other BMDS elements and can accept cues from Aegis, satellites and other external sensors, as well as work in concert with the Patriot/PAC-3.
